Illinois AG warns about buying cars "as is"

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan is launching a new public awareness campaign designed to educate consumers on the warning signs of buying “as is” used cars.

The Attorney General’s Office in recent months has received complaints from consumers who bought used cars “as is,” or without a warranty, leaving consumers on the hook for costly repairs soon after the purchase. Madigan says her office receives a lot of complaints regarding cars. “If you actually put car complaints all together as one you would be in the top five,” Madigan said.

Madigan’s office is launching a public awareness campaign to educate consumers about important warning signs to look for and how to best protect themselves while shopping for a used car.

Tips:

* Look for the buyer’s guide

* Get promises of repair in writing

* Research / know your dealer

* Test drive the vehicle

* Hire an independent mechanic for an inspection

* Ask about a return policy

* Decide on a fair price
